English Grammar Rules

The following rules explain the difference between So and Such in English

We use so ... that, such ... that

a) to show a fact (usually with a result or consequence)i

  • Pamela Ander's feet are big
    (Expresses a fact)

  • Pamela Ander's feet are so big that she can't find shoes her size
    (Emphasizes that you feel strongly about the size of her feet)

b) to show extreme feelings or an opinion about something

  • George Bushoff is an idiot
    (Merely a statement of fact/opinion)
  • George Bushoff is such an idiot that he doesn't even know the capital of his own country
    (Emphasizes the speaker's opinion of the intensity of George Bushoff's idiocy)

 

SO with adjectives and adverbs

so + adjective/adverb + that + result

  • The teacher speaks so clearly that everyone can understand her
  • The sun was so strong that they got burned within 15 minutes

 

SUCH + Nouns

 such + a + (adjective) + singular noun + that + result
(It is common to put an adjective before the noun)

  • He is such a tight person that he even reuses his servillettes
  • Christopher is such a handsome man that all the ladies want him
  • She had such a long speech that everyone stopped paying attention to her

such + plural/uncountable noun + that + result

  • She has such big feet that she has to buy special shoes
  • Woodward Restaurant has such good food that it's always full of people

The article A is used before singular, countable nouns which begin with consonant sounds.a

  • He is a teacher.a
  • She doesn't own a car.a
  • I saw a bear at the zoo.a

When the question word ( who?  what?  which?  How many? ) is the SUBJECT of the verb in the question, we DON'T use an auxilary ( do,does,did). The verb is in the third person.a

What are Modal Verbs

What are Modal Verbs?a

Modal verbs are special verbs which behave very differently from normal verbs. Here are some important differences:aa

A) Modal verbs do not take "-s" in the third person.a

Examples:a

  • He can  speak Chinese.a
  • She should  be here by 9:00.a

 B) You use "not" to make modal verbs negative, even in Simple Present and Simple Past.a

Simple Future has two different forms in English: "will" and "be going to." Although the two forms can sometimes be used interchangeably, they often express two very different meanings. These different meanings might seem too abstract at first, but with time and practice, the differences will become clear. Both "will" and "be going to" refer to a specific time in the future.A

Examples:A

  • You will help him later.A
  • Will you help him later?A
  • You will not help him later.A

USE 1 Now

Use the Present Continuous with Normal Verbs to express the idea that something is happening now, at this very moment. It can also be used to show that something is not happening now.a

  • I am sitting.a
  • I am not standing.a
  • Is he sitting or standing?a
  • They are reading their books.a

 Simple Past

We use the simple past to talk about actions and states which we see as completed in the past.a

We can use it to talk about a specific point in time.a

  • She came back last Friday.a
  • I saw her in the street.a
  • They didn't agree to the deal.a

It can also be used to talk about a period of time in the past.a

  • She lived in Tokyo for seven years.a
  • They were in London from Monday to Thursday of last week.a
  • When I was living in New York, I went to all the art exhibitions I could.a

You will often find the simple past used with time expressions such as these:a

  • Yesterday
  • three weeks ago
  • last year
  • in 2002
  • from March to June
  • for a long time
  • for 6 weeks
  • in the 1980s
  • in the last century
  • in the past

USE 1 Repeated Actions

Use the Simple Present to express the idea that an action is repeated or usual. The action can be a habit, a hobby, a daily event, a scheduled event or something that often happens. It can also be something a person often forgets or usually does not do.a

  • I play tennis.a
  • She does not play tennis.a
  • Does he play tennis?a
  • The train leaves every morning at 8 AM.a
  • The train does not leave at 9 AM.a
  • When does the train usually leave?a
  • She always forgets her purse.a
  • He never forgets his wallet.a
  • Every twelve months, the Earth circles the Sun.a
  • Does the Sun circle the Earth?a

USE 2 Facts or Generalizations
